About Exmoor

Dunster is situated on the very edge of Exmoor, a National Park area named after the River Exe, the main river flowing out of the district, and containing an amazing variety of landscapes and distinct fauna and flora within its 267 square miles. Exmoor is a place of delightful natural tranquillity, with a shifting landscape of moorland, woodland, farmland and valleys cloaking a lovely assortment of cosy pubs and tearooms offering delicious local produce, and also a destination for those seeking adventure via a range of outdoor pursuits—hiking, horse-riding and cycling amongst the most popular of those. Catch a glimpse of the iconic red stag, wonder at the ranging Exmoor ponies, amaze at the star-filled night skies, and explore local villages packed with charming rural character.

The moor’s National Park encompasses the East Lyn Valley, the Brendon Hills, the Vale of Porlock and 55 kilometres of the Bristol Channel coast. Indeed there is in total 55 kilometres of Exmoor coastline, making it the single longest stretch of coastal woodland in England and Wales, andincluding the very highest sea cliffs in England, which reach a height of 314 metres at Culbone Hill. In 1991 its scenery of rocky headlands, ravines, waterfalls and towering cliffs earned the Exmoor coast official recognition as a Heritage Coast.

Exmoor offers unparalleled opportunities for walking, riding, and cycling trails, participating in its regular National Trust shoots, fishing either in the sea or in one of many local reservoirs or rivers, or playing golf at one of the moor’s courses. Alternatively use your time on the Moor to embark on one of the exciting safari adventures, check out one of thearea’s unique museums, such as Porlock’s Exmoor Classic Car Collection, or explore the world of falconry and more at the Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre.

Whether you visit the moor to enjoy a calming rural retreat, or to engage with the excitement of its many outdoor pursuits, Exmoor offers plenty of options to make your southwest holiday a fulfilling and complete experience.
